I have worked with many children over the years that have been SEN identified that are actually slow learners. The curriculum demands a lot from these children and their teachers. So I am trying to create “Active Learning Sheets” that can be used by all abilities to encourage independence. These will give plenty of practice of key skills as well as learning the key elements of the curriculum without having to take time out of the classroom. I try to use real life examples for imagery.

Life Cycle of a Butterfly

Start with “The hungry Caterpillar” story. This worksheet allows children to copy out correct spellings (children need to spell these correctly from the start so as not to form bad habits). Another sheet gives extra practice for children or encourages others to look at other British butterflies. The first shows the life cycle of a “Peacock Butterfly”, one that children can see in the British Garden. I have included different butterflies in another sheet attached. The worksheet requires them to add arrows to show what a life cycle means (the first one having been done for them) and to copy the correct spelling underneath the pictures.

This activity is intended to allow the child to demonstrate what the festival of Easter means to them without imposing the Religious side of Easter. However, it still shows that Easter is a Christian religious festival that will have a religious theme for some. Children can trace over or colour in the word Easter, can trace over the titles in each box and could add their own idea.

A fun method to get children of all ages to produce a descriptive piece of writing. EYFS can draw pictures to show their choice and try to annotate them. Older children can write in simple or more complex sentences.

Geography - KS1 Children will identify the features on the map and copy the correct spellings of these. Using the points of a compass they will then follow the instructions to move around the grid and find the treasure.

Materials – KS1 I have produced this so that children can become familiar with the descriptive words available to them that they need to be able to read and spell for the National Curriculum Science Programme. The format for each material stays the same to aid them with the task. The chosen items have the correct words written underneath them to encourage correct spelling and can be written over for practising the spellings. The items are chosen to generate conversation about how they are made and what properties this describes, therefore.
